Marvel Anime: IRON MAN

July 27th, 2009 | Work

This is the second of the two teaser pieces shown at San Diego on Friday. This is the test animation for the IRON MAN anime series I’m writing, produced for the south east Asian market. Note test animation: it’s intended to show off the style of the piece only. Nothing in here reflects the actual content, just the design and the aesthetic and the animation. The only character in this piece that is in the actual series is Iron Man himself, okay?

  1. I was not aware you were doing the writing for these! I’m actually kind of looking forward to the Iron Man anime (the Wolverine one doesn’t interest me in the slightest, but I think Wolvie’s been overdone these days). I’m glad IM is the only character in the teaser that’s in the series. I was really beginning to be worried the blonde was supposed to be a Pepper Potts and I promptly did an enraged Kermit flail (because Pepper should be strawberry blonde, not because she shouldn’t be there, of course).

So, the question remains: Will Pepper be in the anime? Or are those details hush-hush?

  2. Ok, so he’s not in the series, but man, those generic manga villains always have the best greatcoats. Gives them that nautical air of self-assured menace…

  3. Warren Ellis on Iron Man equals greatness any day. I’m very excited for this series, especially after seeing how well the style works.

  4. Fantastic!
And so much better than “Wolvermullet”.

  5. This looks way better than the Wolverine one.

  6. Aw, I’m kind of disappointed that we can’t look forward to Iron Man fighting Effeminate One-Eyed Space Captain. That guy is trouble in a fancy coat if ever there was one.

  7. Will these be shown in America? Hence the “produced for the south east Asian market” bit. If not, I’m wondering why we only get the little kid animation while every other country seems to get the over the top awesome stuff. Total bollocks!!

  8. That looks like a pretty interesting style, its a lot more organic and fluid than the wolverine one.. seems to be very anime yet not exactly.. the wolvie one looks too stiff an rigid

  9. Very slick and authentically Japanese in my opinion. There was a big fuss over who the villain was and the first thing that popped into my head was that it was an anime version of Dreadknight.
This is just me guessing, but you were told to stray from using villains that might appear in the movies. That’s why Dreadknight wouldn’t surprise me.

  10. Though ‘Ironman’ is prolly more trademarkable in Japan and SE Asia, I am kinda disappointed he’s not called ‘Tetsujin’

  12. That villain looks suspiciously to Captain Harlock – which makes me sad he will not be in the anime.

  13. ¿Will it have the sabbat song as opening?
¿Can you put Fing Fang Foom in it?
Actually, is there even the remote posibility of Anime Nextwave?

  14. Kinda reminds me of Bubble Gum Crisis. People in armor fighting folks that turn into big robots. I’ll check it out.

  15. @ Mike Black

Yeah it sure looks like Cpt. Harlock (Cpt. Tsubasa). That armor fighting reminds me the GUNDAM series too.

If this anime looks like that i’ll be on! I’m just hoping for some plots to be developped. I’ll sure take a look !

  19. Looks better than that Wolverine anime.

  20. I thought that pirate guy was gonna be there he looks badass

  21. I hope the GARlock guy shows up. he’d be a pretty awesome character.

Complete Plan B Archive

Kieron Gillen - 09 Feb 10

The whole run of Plan B magazine has been released as a single 670Mb PDF. That’s 46 issues of some of the finest music writing of the decade. And a lot of posturing pretentiousness too. It’s like two of my favourite things for the price of one. Or none, as it’s a free PDF.

If you’ve any interest in music in the 00s, or music full stop, this is a great thing to just have on file. You’ll discover a new band every time you browse it.

Hell, it’s even worth getting if you’re one of the games journalist sorts. For the first 10-20 issues or so, I was doing games stuff for it. And Quinns and Mathew Kumar too, who I bullied into contributing. Very much written for the non-gamer about games which get pretty much no coverage, we had fun trying to decode the concept of Outsider Games.

Whole thing here. Go gets!

Coilhouse - 08 Feb 10

Back around the time of Issue 03, we launched the Small Business Advertising Program to create affordable ad space for indie companies in the print version of Coilhouse. By the time Issue 04 rolled around, the number of advertisers had grown significantly – by this time, we had record labels, jewelry and clothing designers, sculptors, other magazines, web hosts, toy makers and graphic designers advertising in our pages. Click here to see them all. With editorial duties taking up more and more of our time as the weeks go by, the moment has come for us to seek help with the advertising side of running the magazine. We’re looking to hire an Ad Manager for our Small Business Advertising Program, starting with Coilhouse Magazine #05… and possibly subsequent issues.

Full details after the jump!

"Inflection Points" Presentation

Open The Future - 08 Feb 10

For those folks who are interested, here's the Slideshare version of the presentation I gave last week at the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute annual meeting. I was asked to talk about foresight thinking, as the event theme was "The Big One of 2056: What Went Right?" a look at a fictional 7.8 quake in the SF region that was handled as well as they could imagine possible.

My goal was to offer a bit of reassurance to the audience that there is some real utility to thinking about the future, and to spell out (in a cursory way) the kinds of big picture issues they should keep in mind while looking ahead forty-six years.

By and large, it was a successful talk. The post-talk questions were engaged, with little push-back, and I'm told that the overall response from the audience was quite positive.

The talk was video recorded, and I'm told will eventually be available to the public. I'll link when that happens.
