Kim Stanley Robinson’s brilliant sf novel RED MARS is now available as a free PDF download from its US publisher.  Direct link to PDF, and their Free Library page listing it and other available free downloads.  Be warned: RED MARS is first of a trilogy, and there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself craving the others (GREEN MARS and BLUE MARS).

  1. Those are indeed excellent books.
Full of science, human relations, great characters and believable colonization of an alien planet.

  2. It’s also now free from the Amazon Kindle store. US only. Apologies.

  3. This is a fantastic book – thanks for the link. This’ll be something on my phone.

  4. My God. This is the first I’ve heard of these books, but the opening sentences are pulled off with such style and beauty: “The planet had accreted, melted, roiled and cooled… But all of that happened in mineral unconsciousness, and unobserved.”

Finally, Warren Ellis introduces me to something new that may not involve genital mutilation.

  5. I remember Red Mars/ Blue Mars /Green Mars!!!
    They were awesome.
I’m going to read them again.
    Thanks

  9. Kim Stanley Robinson’s eco-economics as a concept brought forward in Red-Mars is the only interesting forward thinking economic paradigm that could conceivably create a sustainable successor to capitalism.

These books are absolutely fun to read and losing yourself in the characters is a treat as well. What happens to humans when they leave the confines of nature?
