Jess Nevin’s FANTASTIC VICTORIANA

April 1st, 2006 | brainjuice

I’m kind of busy today, so I’m just going to tell you that you need this book. And you can buy it here at Amazon for 37% off the cover price, if the $50 tag scares you. Seriously, I’ve been buried in this book for three or four months now, and it never fails to fascinate and inspire me. You need a copy.

(18 hours later: Amazon.com Sales Rank: #3,072 in Books (See Top Sellers in Books)/ Yesterday: #115,194 in Books. Not bad.)

  2. […] Comics writer Warren Ellis has been enthusing about Jess Nevins’ Fantastic Victoriana. Here’s hoping it inspires him to write something. […]

  3. It must be said, your arguement is quite compelling!
If I wasn’t going away for a month I would indeed buy it.

  4. Right-o. Since you said it.

  5. Bought it. Paid full price. The wife will love it. Thanks for the recommendation.

  6. Who Am I To Argue?

According to the esteemed Warren Ellis, I need this book: “The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana,” by reference librarian Jess Nevins. And he may be right. Just look at that cover! Dizzying. Hmm. Maybe I can get the library to buy…

  7. One of the more fascinating aspects of this book is the number of fantasy stories from the 1800s that were nothing more than morality fable propaganda for certain religious groups.
There’s one guy who’s a detective working for the CoE who goes around solving crimes, all of which have been perpetrated by catholics.

  8. The cover art is by illustrator John Picacio, who is currently up for his second Hugo award in the Best Artist category. He has a website at http://www.johnpicacio.com and his work is always stunning.

  9. Known Jess for years over the Net, and when he had it as a website, this was invaluable. Unreservedly echo Warren’s recommendation—a must have.–Al

  10. Warren, this reminds me – I always meant to send you this link about end-of-the-world scenarios…maybe you’ve seen it – but for entertainment and as a research pool – it rocks, bubba. If you like it, all you have tohave to do is love me forever…

  11. Saw this months ago while googling steampunk/victorian science fiction. Thought “YES MUST HAVE!” then I saw the price and sanity flooded back in.

    Seriously tempted now though.

  12. Geez, I want love and never left the link?

  13. And while you’re at it, pick up Mr Nevins Annotations to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. All of these items will prevent baldness (especially in the ladies) and increase bedroom virility.

  14. Sir–

    Thank you *very* much.

The boost in sales is especially appreciated.

  15. I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you down the road!
