New Mammal Seen In Borneo

December 6th, 2005 | researchmaterial

In the dense central forests of Borneo, a conservation group has found what appears to be a new species of mammal.

WWF caught two images of the animal, which is bigger than a domestic cat, dark red, and has a long muscular tail. Local people, the WWF says, had not seen the species before, and researchers say it looks to be new. The creature, believed to be carnivorous, was spotted in the Kayan Mentarang National Park, which lies in Indonesian territory on Borneo…

  1. It really looks like a large North American muskrat to me, just a different color. They’re mustelids, rather than mammals… perhaps the same family?

  2. Damn thing threw me a sec. Doesn’t it look like a dinosaur at first glace, the tail being the neck of a plant-eater?

  3. I totally thought it was a dinosaur, too!

  4. They think it’s a viverrid. Makes sense to me; first thing I thought when I saw that picture is “Looks like a small fossa.”

  5. Looks like the original Dino from the original King Kong, kicked to the curb and looking for work. Now it’s a Stunt Creature for WWF (not to be confused with the wrestling federation it trounced).

  6. Whatever it is…I want to be the first to eat it.

  7. Well given the look of its eyes I wouldn’t be too worried about the future survival of the thing. If anybody gets too close to it it’ll just fry their unwashed hippy asses with its hex vision. Redeye my ass!!!

  8. That is so clearly a man in a suit.

  9. It’s obviously a photo of a chupacabra.

  10. I’m on the dinosaur bandwagon, as well.

And maybe IT will eat US.

  11. those arent glowing EYES! those are its glowing twin anuses! that isnt a muscular tail! thats its neck!
fools! it is the death-beast that has come to absolve mankind, purge us of our insolence…IT IS:
    the Lorax.

    it speaks for the trees.

  12. But that can’t be! Evolution is only a theory! New species just don’t “appear”!

    Heh…

  13. So THAT’s what the Beast from Revelations looks like!

  14. As long as they don’t name it after that guy. A “wulffraat” indeed. They’d all commit suicide if they caught wind of that.

I want one, so it can eat my face when I try to pet it.

  15. Did anyone else catch the name of the leader of the team who discovered it?

“…The team which discovered it, led by biologist Stephan Wulffraat, is publishing full details in a new book on Borneo and its wildlife.”

I thought that was rather serendipitous.

  16. “…moments after this photo was taken the photographer was eaten.”

  17. “Then afterwards, the Asian guy behind the photographer ate the mammal.”

  18. I just thought it looked like a lemur, myself. Hmm.

  19. The flesh eating lemur has risen once again! His triumphant return shall coincide with the rise of Richard Simmons to the office of the President of the United States. Richard and the lemur will rule the world together!

  20. This flesh eating lemur you speak of, can he be trusted? Don’t get me wrong, I would probably vote for him and Richard. It’s just that I have trouble trusting something with two glowing anuses. How does it know which one to use?

  21. If you look closely one anus is brighter than the other. That is the one that is in use. The dual anus is the feature that Richard actually was attracted to most. It is a beacon of light, some say. The flesh eating lemur will act as VP and bodyguard for Richard. The last time the lemur was pressed into action he ate the face of Condoleezza Rice. God love him.

LONG LIVE THE FLESH EATING LEMUR!
