That’s funny – it looks exactly how I imagine my brain to look when I wake up after a hard night’s drinking. Although there seem to be a lot less jackhammers.

Ur Texts

March 30th, 2006 | researchmaterial

Italian archeologists working in Iraq have announced the discovery of numerous stone tablets from the ancient civilization of Ur.

“This is an exceptional find,” team leader Silvia Chiodi told the Italian news service ANSA, noting the tablets were found at an archaeological site not far from the location of the ancient city.

“The most surprising thing is the time span the tablets cover, ranging from 2,700 B.C., the First Dynasty of Ur, to 2,100 B.C., the Third Dynasty,” Giovanni Pettinato, an expert on Sumerian civilization, told ANSA. Pettinato surmised that if the tablets were part of a library, there might be thousands of them at the site.

Ur, near the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriya, is cited in the Bible as the birthplace of the prophet Abraham, ANSA reported, noting Ur was also the religious center of the Sumerian civilization.

A most famous classic of ancient literature, Gilgamesh, was written at Ur.

How Many Things Do You Find Wrong With This Story?

March 30th, 2006 | researchmaterial

One of the most notorious drunk drivers in the Ottawa area has been found not criminally responsible on his latest impaired driving charges because of a mental disorder that makes him believe female celebrities are controlling his actions.

Matt Brownlee was arrested last October after police spotted a pickup truck speeding along a busy street in downtown Ottawa.

The 33-year-old man told psychiatrists that he knew the legal repercussions of his actions, but believed singer Shania Twain was helping him drive.

On Monday, the judge drew on several psychiatric assessments in ruling that Brownlee was not criminally responsible for his actions because he suffers from delusions that celebrities such as Twain are communicating with him telepathically.

Ten years ago, Brownlee was given a seven-year prison sentence and barred from driving for the rest of his life after he killed an Ottawa woman, Linda Lebreton-Holmes, and her 12-year-old son while driving with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.

Another assessment of how much risk he poses to the community could see Brownlee being detained in hospital, released under supervision in the community, or given an absolute discharge…

This May Help You Save My Life, Which Is More Important Than Yours Because I Am A Genius

March 29th, 2006 | researchmaterial

Via Lisa The Riveter:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours, he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke–totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1. Ask the individual to SMILE.

2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

3. Ask the person to SAY A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently). (example: “It is sunny today.”)

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911(999, etc) immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association’s annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

Admin: Technorati

Posting this from the pub before I forget:

Over the last day or so, you'll have seen hits from Technorati appear as
posts within the blog. This was an experiment in building automatic
content into the site, as arranged by Mr William Gray of the Meltdowns.
Taking a look at it this morning, I decided the Technorati hits were
swamping out the rest of the content. So in a little while Billy's going
to deselect that feed, and they'll all go away. It was a good and useful
experiment, but it was clearly affecting readability. We may add some
other stuff in over the next few days.
